Golf Tournament

The US Open Golf Tournament has a long history beginning with the first US Open’s Men’s Championship, which was held on a nine-hole course in Newport, Rhode Island on October 4, 1895. This tournament, which is now held annually in the month of June, once had a wide variety of both professional and amateur players entering and for many of the first years of its existence British golfers dominated the courses. This was until the year 1911, which saw the first American, John J. McDermott, win the tournament. After this point American golfers began to have success in the tournament more frequently. At this point it was a rather large golfing event and soon evolved into one of the

four Major Championships in men’s golf, being officially scheduled on both the PGA Tour and PGA European Tour. Today’s US Open Golf Tournaments are held on courses that limit low scoring as they are usually very challenging, forcing golfers to be very accurate and play at a high level.

In August, Tiger Woods once again hogged the sports pages with his fifth straight victory on the PGA Tour in the 2006 season as well as seventh overall PGA championship this year. When you think about the fact that so many great golfers have yet to win a single tournament in their entire careers and yet here is Tiger with seven titles this year alone, you can easily why they are saying Woods has a chance to be universally recognized as the greatest golfer who ever lived before his career is over.

I was able to watch the 2007 PGA Masters from Thursday’s first round and watch Zach Johnson a rookie from the USA Team of the 2006 Ryder Cup hold his own against the best of the best in the game of golf at Augusta National when Augusta was arguably the toughest it has been in close to 20 years. What impressed me most about Zach is the focus in the present he displayed at the tender age of 31 in front of huge galleries, TV cameras airing to over 190 countries around the world and, playing against his idols on a course he walked around as a guest following one of his idols Phil Mickelson only a few years

ago dreaming of once playing on this famed course.
