Zacatecas is both a state in the nation of Mexico and the capital city of that state. Zacatecas was founded in 1548, after the discovery of silver nearby, and was formally recognized in 1584. The city currently has a population of around 130,000. The name means Place where fodder abounds.
Zacatecas grew quickly as miners flocked to the silver mines, and was one of the chief mining centers in Mexico. In 1616 the Franciscans built a college in the city.
